Bible Verses About Witchcraft and the Occult.

Many people read horoscopes or visit a psychic out of curiosity or a wish to know the future. Scripture speaks plainly about these practices, and it does so out of care for the people God made.

The Bible forbids seeking guidance from spirits, stars or fortune tellers. It also points to something better: a God who knows the future, speaks through his Word, and has already defeated the powers of darkness.

What God forbids

God told his people to stay away from every practice that seeks hidden knowledge apart from him.

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul lists sorcery among the works of the flesh, next to sins many people consider ordinary.

Why it falls short

The stars and the spirits cannot give what only God can give.

  • Isaiah 8:19-20

    Read in context
And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.
  • Isaiah 47:13-14

    Read in context
You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you. Behold, they are like stubble; the fire consumes them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before!
