Bible Verses About Healing.

God has power to heal, and Jesus showed that power again and again. Scripture invites believers to pray for the sick and to trust God's compassion.

The Bible does not promise that every illness will be cured in this life. It does promise that God is good in suffering, that he heals the soul, and that every believer will one day receive a body that never gets sick.

God's compassion and power

God cares about our bodies and our pain.

  • Psalm 103:2-4

    Read in context
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
  • Psalm 147:3

    Read in context
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
  • Matthew 9:35-36

    Read in context
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
  • Mark 1:40-42

    Read in context
And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.

Praying for the sick

Scripture tells believers to bring sickness to God in prayer.

  • James 5:14-16

    Read in context
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
  • Jeremiah 17:14

    Read in context
Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.

Healing of the soul

The deepest healing is forgiveness and peace with God.

  • Isaiah 53:5

    Read in context
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

In context this is healing from sin through the Messiah's suffering. Peter applies it the same way in 1 Peter 2:24.

  • 1 Peter 2:24

    Read in context
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

When healing does not come

God's grace is present even when the illness remains.

  • 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

    Read in context
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Paul prayed three times for relief. God answered with grace instead of removing the thorn.

  • Romans 8:18

    Read in context
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
  • Revelation 21:4

    Read in context
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
  • Philippians 3:20-21

    Read in context
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
