Bible Verses for Wives.
Scripture honors wives. Proverbs 31 praises a woman of strength and wisdom, and the New Testament describes marriage as a picture of Christ and the church, a relationship of sacrificial love and joyful trust.
These verses should be read in their context, where husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Use them to encourage a wife, to pray for her, or to grow as one.
A woman of strength
Proverbs 31 praises character more than appearance.
Proverbs 31:10-12
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
Proverbs 31:25-26
Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Proverbs 18:22
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
Marriage as a picture of Christ
Paul describes wives and husbands in light of the gospel.
Ephesians 5:22-25
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Paul calls wives to submit as to the Lord and husbands to love as Christ gave himself up. Both callings come together.
Ephesians 5:33
However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Colossians 3:18-19
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Beauty that lasts
God values a heart shaped by faith.
1 Peter 3:3-4
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
1 Peter 3:7
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
To encourage her
Words a husband can pray and speak over his wife.
Song of Solomon 4:7
You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.
Proverbs 12:4
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
