Bible Verses About Forgiveness.

Forgiveness starts with God. Every Christian has been forgiven a debt they could never repay, and that is the ground on which Scripture asks us to forgive others.

Forgiving someone does not mean what they did was acceptable, and it does not always mean trust is restored right away. It means releasing the debt to God. These verses show why and how.

How God forgives

God's forgiveness is complete and undeserved.

  • Psalm 103:10-12

    Read in context
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

  • Matthew 18:21-22

    Read in context
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
  • Luke 23:34

  • Romans 12:19-21

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
