Bible Verses About Anxiety and Worry.
Anxiety is not new. David, Paul, and Jesus' own disciples knew worry and pressure. Scripture does not shame the anxious. It points them to a Father who knows what they need and invites them to bring every care to him.
These verses move from God's invitation, to the reasons you can trust him, to how he steadies an anxious mind. Read them slowly. Then turn them into prayer.
Bring it to God in prayer
God answers anxiety with an invitation, not a lecture.
Philippians 4:6-7
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Paul wrote this from prison. The peace he describes guards the heart even when circumstances stay hard.
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Casting your cares is tied to humbling yourself under God's hand, trusting his timing over your own control.
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 62:8
Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Your Father knows what you need
Jesus gives reasons not to worry, all grounded in the Father's care.
Matthew 6:25-27
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
Matthew 6:28-30
And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Matthew 6:31-34
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Seeking the kingdom first reorders our worries. Jesus does not promise ease, but he does promise the Father's provision.
Luke 12:32
“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Peace for an anxious mind
God gives a peace that rests on who he is.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Isaiah 26:3
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Psalm 94:19
When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.
2 Thessalonians 3:16
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.
Train your thoughts
Scripture also calls you to choose where your mind dwells.
Philippians 4:8-9
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
